LG VX8300 Review

Last year, the LG VX8100 became one of Verizon’s EVDO flip phone hits. It had a sweet set of features including a bright display, a Mini SD expansion slot, 1.3 megapixel camera and of course EVDO with V Cast support. It hit the feature phone sweet spot: a flip phone that packed in all those features plus an MP3 and video player with sound via its beefy stereo speakers (and headphone jack). This year the VX8300 updates the LG VX8100 on Verizon’s network. The differences? A much slimmer and sleeker body, OLED external screen and a microSD card slot. Throw in integrated Bluetooth, Mobile Web 2.0 support, voice recognition and basic PIM applications, and you’ve got the new and improved LG VX8300.

Design and Ergonomics
The LG VX8100 was not a hefty phone, and the VX8300 slims the body down to 3.38 x 1.93 x 0.92 inches. The clamshell feels nice in hand and is balanced well for one-handed operation. The blue cover has been replaced by a more contemporary and business-like grey which makes the phone looks slimmer as well. The outer color OLED display is bright and functional music player control buttons sit right below. The 1.3 megapixel camera and flash live above the outer display. Like the VX8100, you will find the stereo speakers on each side of the top hinge. The LG has just enough buttons to provide the necessary shortcuts and you won’t feel that there are so many buttons as to overwhelm. You will find the volume up and down rocker and the voice command keys on the left of the phone and the camera key and the MicroSD card slot on the right. The headset jack and the fixed antenna live on top of the phone and the charger port is at the bottom. The battery lives under the battery door on the back.
When you open the clamshell you will find the bright and color saturated main display and the earpiece on the top panel and the keypad along with a five way directional pad above it in the bottom panel. Two soft keys and the call send and end buttons as well as CLR key surround the d-pad. The two soft keys provide different options in the context of your application and data while the 4 navigation keys around the OK button on the d-pad launch Get PIX & FLIX, calendar, Mobile Web and GET IT NOW. If you’re a Verizon Wireless regular, you’ll recognize the “Verizon UI”.
Phone Features and Reception
The LG VX8300 is a digital dual band phone supporting both the 800 MHz CDMA and 1900 MHz PCS bands. Like the VX8100, the LG supports Verizon’s V Cast service for high speed download and playback of video and V Cast gaming. You can download the latest music tracks, music videos, made-for-mobile short films/cartoons, and news from all major news sources like CNN, ABC along with sports and weather reports. The LG has both 1xRTT (2.5G) and EVDO (3G) for data which means fast download speeds for music and videos. The Mobile Web 2.0 web browser works well with WAP sites and can handle some HTML sites.
The LG has a good set of phone features for a phone in this class, plus a voice command feature that makes it stand out from the crowd. The basic phone features supported include speed dial (98 speed dials plus a voicemail speed dial), 72 chord polyphonic ring tone support plus 15 unique ring tones and vibrate and silent modes. You can have caller picture IDs and caller ring tones IDs so you can tell who is calling by photo and ring tone. The LG has an enhanced speaker-independent voice recognition which you can use to dial numbers, send messages, look up something, etc. and you don’t have to record a voice tag for it to recognize your command. You can also use the phone to record voice memos. The voice recognition software works very well in all the tasks and applications.
Verizon has slightly poorer coverage than Sprint in the North Dallas area. The LG usually gets about 2 bars on EVDO network and 1-2 bars on the voice network. If you are in good coverage area for Verizon you should have no problem using this phone. With 2 bar signal strength throughout this area, we got decent voice quality with some distortion in some calls. Like the VX8100, the VX8300 is plenty loud. Make sure that you adjust the volume to avoid more distortion.

The LG comes with a messaging application that can send and receive text messages, MMS messages with sound, images and videos. The email plugin takes you Mobile Web’s free email portal where you can access your MSN, AOL, Yahoo and other free email service web sites. The email on the LG VX8300 doesn’t support POP3/IMAP. There is also web based chat plug in. IM is supported by the LG, but there is no IM client included on the phone. You can download it from Verizon’s mobile web site.
The LG VX8300 comes with some basic PIM (Personal Information Manager) applications which you can find under Tools. The contact application can store up to 500 entries with 5 numbers, two emails and a picture ID for each entry. Other PIM apps include calendar (a basic scheduling tool), notes, alarm, world clock, calculator and a tip calculator.

Display, Gaming and Multimedia
Following the tradition of the VX8100, the LG VX8300 has a beautiful screen. It’s bright, vibrant and color saturated. The 262K color TFT internal screen can display 176 x 220 pixels with 10 lines and the 65K color OLED outer display is set at 96 x 96 pixels at 6 lines. If you are a fan of music videos, photo albums and are V Cast user, you will appreciate the screen.
One of the biggest draws for the LG is its multimedia features which include full-duplex  stereo speakers, a music player, camera and software to display photos, video playback and of course, V Cast service support where you can download the latest music, videos and games right on the phone. The stereo speakers are loud and have decent sound when you play music or watch videos with sound. If you want to get better sound, purchase the Verizon’s V Cast Music Essentials Kit which includes a pair of stereo earbud headsets or plug in a nice pair of external speakers. Once you have paid and downloaded the songs, ring tones and videos, you can find them in My Tunes/Tones and My Flix. The V Cast service also include news, stock, weather and other info you need daily. In addition to news, V Cast also offer some comedy shorts, cartoons and other popular programs on MTV, VH1, Sesame Street and more free of charge. It will certainly keep you entertained while waiting for a flight or stand in line. If you do get the Music Essentials Kit you will get the software for ripping songs from the CD and a USB cable you can use to transfer songs from your PC to the phone. The LG can only play songs from the V Cast download library or CDs ripped using Windows Media Player 10. It can’t play iTune songs and V Cast music isn’t compatible with Mac OS X.
Playing 3D games is a pleasure on the LG VX8300. We saw great performance when playing some of the latest games such as Cars and Elder Scrolls Oblivion. The D-pad and other control buttons are just big enough to play action game.

Camera
Though the camera resolution stayed at 1.3 megapixel resolution, the quality of photos is noticeably better than those taken by the VX8100. The focus works well for both landscape shots and close up shots. Compared to the VX8100, the VX8300’s photos are sharper, more saturated and have less noise. You’ll get less whiteout in full sun shots and clearer indoor shots (if lighting is good). The VX8300 camera and software are some of the better among 1.3 megapixel camera phones. The phone can save photos and videos directly to a MicroSD card, if present.
You can launch the camera by either pressing the dedicated camera button on the right side of the phone or by going into the Get It Now menu and selecting Get PIX & FLIX/Take PIX. In Verizon V Cast lingo, PIX are photos and FLIX are videos. While in the camera application, you can set resolution, self timer, flash, brightness, shutter sound, while balance, color effects, night mode and front display. You can choose from 5 resolutions and the max setting is 1280 x 960 and the minimum setting is 16 x 120 which can be used for photo call ID. The flash is quite bright with reasonably wide coverage and can illuminate dark areas for a decent photo, though it tends to white out light objects. The color and light meters are user adjustable. So make sure that you check the settings before take photos for best quality. The outer display acts as a secondary viewfinder that makes taking self-portrait photos a breeze.
The LG VX8300 can take videos with audio at 176 x 144 resolution. You can shoot videos of any length as long as your have enough memory to store it. The quality of the video is largely the same as the VX8100’s video quality. Well-lit areas yielded the best quality videos with no ghosting or blocky artifacts. The camera can’t deal with poorly lit areas for recording videos, and with no option to turn on the flash light you will get videos that are too dark even after you crank up the brightness settings. The audio syncs with video very well.

Bluetooth and MicroSD Slot
The LG VX8300 has integrated Bluetooth v1.1 and supports Bluetooth Headset, Hands-free, serial port, object push and dial-up networking (DUN) profiles. The Bluetooth software can store up to 20 pairing partners and can connect to one Bluetooth device at a time.
The LG worked well with several Bluetooth headsets we tested it. It’s easy to pair it with all headsets. Go to Settings and Tools and launch the Bluetooth app (# 7 on the list) to find new pairing partners. When the phone and headset are paired all the button press sound, music, video and call voice will pipe through the headsets. When working with the Cardo scala 500 Bluetooth headset, the LG has loud and clear incoming voice. The outgoing voice quality through the scala headset is above average with volume on the low end. When we tested the phone with the Jabra FreeSpeak BT250 Bluetooth headset we got excellent incoming and outgoing voice quality and very high volume. FreeSpeak users should enjoy using this phone with their headsets. The range however couldn’t reach more than 15 feet with any headset. If you plan on using your phone with vehicle accessories as hands free solution, you can check the compatibility chart for popular vehicles that can work with the phone here.
vCard push is supported, but not object push. This means you can’t transfer files from your computer to the phone. The LG does support Dial Up Networking (DUN) which is a step up from the VX8100 (Verizon disabled DUN on the 8100). If you want to use the phone as a modem via Bluetooth, you will need to get the Verizon tethering service plan and make sure you have the correct Verizon access software and settings. You will need to turn on the Discovery mode in Bluetooth on the VX8300 in order to pair it with your PC/Mac.
Leaving Bluetooth on doesn’t deplete battery life by much, which means you can leave it paired to your Bluetooth headset constantly without worrying about draining the juice.
The LG VX8300 comes with a MicroSD (aka TransFlash) slot which is the best way to transfer your multimedia files from the phone to your PC. We tested a SanDisk TransFlash card with the phone and had no trouble transferring files to and from the card using the phone, a PDA and PC with card reader.

Battery Life
The LG VX8300 comes with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that’s user replaceable. The battery capacity is 1,100 mAh which is 100 mAh more than the VX8100. That’s a small bump up. But given the fact that most of the features have remained the same, the VX8300 increased talk time from 3.7 hours (VX8100) to 3.8 hours. The claimed standby time however has doubled and now is at 15 days which sounds overly optimistic but it’s very close to our actual test results. The battery life is comparable to other CDMA phones with similar features. It will last you for about 2 days if you talk for 40 minutes on the phone, play games and watch V Cast videos for half an hour with some light use of Tools such as contacts and calendar. It will last you for about 2 hours if you continuously download videos, music and watch them on V Cast.
Conclusion
A sweet clamshell feature phone has just gotten sweeter and slimmer. The feature set is compelling with MP3 playback, a very good camera, Bluetooth and V Cast (EVDO).
Pro: Slimmer clamshell body, 1.3 megapixel takes very good photos and records nice videos. Both internal and external screens are bright with good color balance. The stereo speakers are good and stereo headset output is great! V Cast support creates enormous opportunity for the LG to entertain with video, music, news and more. Great standby time.
Con: Not much data usability outside the Verizon Web portal, WAP sites and the V Cast content (many popular web sites get out of memory errors, though the browser does manage to load the page or most of it). You need to buy additional kit to get the stereo headsets, music ripping CD and the USB cable.

Dell Precision M2400 User Review

The Dell Precision M2400 is the Latitude E6400’s identical twin sibling. Built from the same chassis, the only differences between the two lie in the NVIDIA Quadro FX 370M graphics card and the metallic wave design screen cover. While the M2400 is marketed as a mobile workstation and geared towards video editing, animation and CAD manipulation users on the go, the reinforced magnesium alloy chassis and an equally impressive security system makes this particular laptop a great companion not only for road warriors, but for anyone seeking a robust and reliable machine.

Build and Design

As I briefly mentioned in the introduction, the M2400 is constructed with a magnesium alloy chassis which helps minimize overall flex and heightens durability. Similar to the Latitude E6400 series, the hinges are extremely robust which gives a strong notion of a brawny build quality. With a durable matte plastic exterior, the M2400 isn’t prone to fingerprints like many of the glossy consumer-class notebooks, yet stands out from most business-class units with a fashionable metallic screen cover.

The selection of ports is excellent and certainly sufficient for most mobile users. There are also docking options available, the E-port replicator ($129) and E-port Plus replicator ($199), for those whom require additional USB ports and/or dual monitor support.

One of my main concerns regarding the build is the lack of a hard drive caddy that could effectively provide additional protection to the drive. I am a little disturbed knowing that I am only two screws and a small nudge away from releasing the hard drive from its bay. Even when the hard drive is securely locked in place, there is still a little wiggle room and I would have preferred some physical barrier where my hands can not affect the position of the hard drive during normal operational use.

Screen

Equipped with the LG-Philips LPL0140 (aka LP141WP2) LED screen, the panel offers admirable luminance, average contrast ratios and typical viewing angles.

Despite listing an above average contrast ratio of 500:1 on the spec sheet, the screen appears to be slightly washed out, especially when the brightness is set at maximum. Vertical viewing angles are average while horizontal viewing angles perform slightly better. Graininess is non-existent and all text and images can be produced with high clarity. Although the screen isn’t quite perfect, it’s adequate for most mobile CAD users.

In terms of build, the screen suffers from no wobble and trivial flex. Applying pressure from the back does not cause any color distortions either. Like the Lenovo T series laptops, the M2400 is sturdy enough to be confidently picked up by the screen. Compared to the Latitude E6400, the screen on the M2400 feels more robust. On the other hand, the screen bezel feels frightening delicate and can be pried from all four sides with little effort. This however, doesn’t seem to jeopardize the overall build quality of the screen since most people will rarely run their fingers or sharp objects across their screens.

The ambient light sensor works flawlessly and unlike some of the Asus units I’ve used in the past, the sensor dims and brightens the screen perfectly for my taste. There’s also the option of disabling the light sensor for those who are not accustomed to the automatic light adjustment.

While this particular unit uses an LG-Philips panel, Dell also uses a Samsung screen for the M2400. The Samsung panel (SEC5442) is a tad more washed out, but still provides excellent luminance and similar viewing angles. The differences between these two panels are minute and are only noticeable upon close inspection.

Speakers

Using the same integrated IDT high definition stereo speakers as the Latitude E6400, acoustics are average for volume and sub-par for quality. As expected from a 2 channel built-in speaker system, the speakers lack bass, and the treble-heavy audio can easily disgust any audiophile. As John Ratsey mentioned in his Latitude E6400 review, the large speaker grills are primarily decorative and the speakers itself are small ~12mm circular units that sit near the middle of each grill. If anyone should require better quality sound, a pair of headphones or external speakers would help overcome these limitations and suffice most people.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Being a night owl myself, the one feature I fancy most is the back-lit keyboard. It is shameful that many notebook manufactures still don’t offer this wonderful option. Needless to say, my overall typing experience is very pleasing. However, putting the fancy lights aside, the M2400 offers a full-sized keyboard with decent tactile feedback and good comfort. Flex is concentrated mainly on the upper right corner, but is not noticeable with normal daily usage since that particular section is used mostly by your pinky and uses less pressure than other fingers. It would be nice to see more dedicated hotkeys for media controls, but these features are often lacking in business-class laptops.

The touchpad is remarkably small (even the touchpad on the 12.1” Asus U6 has a larger surface area) and difficult to use. Tracking with the touchpad will often require multiple finger movements and can get annoying at times. Luckily, the M2400 offers a track-stick (similar to Lenovo’s trackpoint pointing device) centered between the G, H and B keys which allows easier and more versatile cursor movements. The touchpad buttons can only be described as soft and mushy and has slower tactile feedback than other laptops I have used in the past; it took me a little while to get used to.

Processor and Performance

Configured with the 2.80GHz T9600 Intel processor, NVIDIA Quadro FX 370M graphics chip and 4GB of memory, the M2400 can rip through programs with ease and provide enough multitasking power for most folks. Graphics intensive tasks may suffer somewhat from the GDDR2 graphics memory and a 64-bit bus width, but still be able to handle casual gaming and light CAD applications without issues. Below are benchmarks and CPU/GPU specifications to illustrate a more quantitative analysis of the M2400’s performance.

Battery Life

The 85WHr 9 cell battery is able to provide enough power for 310 minutes of basic web browsing, instant messaging and word processing with the back-lit keyboard on and screen brightness set at minimum. Although this is less than what Dell has advertized, the figure is still fairly modest for a laptop with this particular hardware configuration. With the 84WHr extended battery slice, I suspect the battery life would double to ~600 minutes under the same conditions.

Heat and Noise

The cooling system on the M2400 is questionable. While the CPU can maintain its own temperatures effectively, the GPU is open to discussion. Unlike the CPU, the GPU and motherboard chipset uses a thermal pad instead of a copper plate for transferring heat to the heat pipe. Since thermal pads doesn’t conduct heat as efficient as copper metal, the Quadro FX 370M can spike up to 95°C during load while running graphics intensive software such as 3DMark06. On the contrary, idle temps run shockingly cool. CPU and GPU temps hold steady at 31°C and 48°C respectively. Operating with an E-dock Plus with an external monitor will increase idle temps by ~10-15°C for both the CPU and GPU.

External temperatures are excellent and the M2400 can be used comfortably on the lap. Basic word processing and web surfing are well below the triple-digit temperatures.

The noise from the fan is audible and can get a little irritating at times; especially when the M2400 is parked on the docking station running nothing but the necessary tasks for operating Vista and antivirus software in the background. During normal use without a dock, the fan isn’t as noticeable and runs at lower speeds.

Security Features

Being a business-class laptop, the M2400 is designed with several security features tailored to fit the needs for most businesses. If entering a password is not your preferred mode for logging into your system, the M2400 also offers fingerprint, smart card reader and a contactless smart card reader for your choosing. Every security feature can be accessed and configured in Dell’s ControlPoint Security Manager (already pre-installed and also available on the driver disk). Of course, the industry security standard, TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is also part of the package.

Customer Service and Support

Within the past month, I have purchased 2 Dell laptops from the Dell outlet store. Although for each purchase there came minor issues, Dell was able to express ship a battery replacement and a missing restore disk that I received the very next day. I was reminded by the rep that the NBD (Next Business Day) warranty service was not part of my protection plan for my Latitude, yet I was still given the “NBD” treatment. Rumors say Dell’s marketing strategy is to under-promise and over-deliver; I won’t argue with that. Dell has also taken a step further to ensure customer satisfaction in which a rep will actively call to follow up on the delivery status and answer any questions or issues you may have with your laptop. I am very impressed with the quality of Dell’s after-sales service and the only negative words I can say is the 15-20 min wait to get an actual human customer rep behind the other line and the inability to view your tracking number and status online.

Conclusion

The Precision M2400 is an excellent match for business professionals and light CAD users. It is a distinguished laptop that offers brilliant processing power with a hint of style. The ruggedness and strapping build is expected from a business laptop, and the M2400 surely lives up to that standard. Although there are some minor setbacks, the M2400 is still a well-made system and can easily survive the daily bumps and bruises encountered by most frequent travelers.

Lenovo ThinkPad T400s Review

It seems a common trend at Lenovo right now is making super thin and lightweight ThinkPads. First the X300 hit the market, offering a super thin and lightweight chassis with the ruggedness we have come to expect from a ThinkPad. Now Lenovo has done it again with the T400, bringing a newer, lighter, redesigned T400s to the table. In this official review we show you whats changed on this new 14" ThinkPad, which even includes the legendary keyboard.

Build and Design


The new ThinkPad T400s looks completely revamped and polished compared to the regular T400. The chassis has slimmed down significantly, and the weight of the notebook has also dropped by almost a pound. The exterior is still wrapped in Lenovos much-loved rubberized black paint, but the design just looks cleaner and less busy than previous ThinkPad models.

Looking inside, the main changes start to become obvious. Besides the new keyboard and touchpad that we will go over shortly, Lenovo changed the shape of the palmrest around the touchpad, with the touchpad resting flush with the palmrest instead of being slightly recessed. The screen bezel is smooth all around the perimeter of the display, unlike the T400 which shows rough plastic grids near the built-in antennas and cutouts near the light and webcam. Even when compared to the ThinkPad X301, the new T400s looks more refined. The speaker grills are larger and look better suited to the design. Even the fingerprint reader manages to blend in better, with an all-black design instead of gold and silver like past models.

Build quality is still fantastic, with barely a hint of chassis flex even as it has decreased in thickness. The screen has some minor side-to-side flex when open, but no more than previous models. Protection for the screen, even with the super thin cover is surprisingly good, showing only small amounts of screen distortion when you are squeezing the back of the display. The new chassis feels quite rugged.

With the thinner design Lenovo completely reworked the chassis for the T400s, and it looks completely different than the T400 once you start opening it up. The hard drive is now accessed through a panel under the left side of the palmrest, which is now 1.8" instead of the 2.5" found in the T400. System memory and wireless cards are found under a single access panel on the bottom of the notebook. Compared to removing the palmrest on previous models, you now just loosen one screw and pop off a single panel to upgrade memory. With most of the slots changing location to the underside of the notebook, removing the keyboard is now only required to replace a broken one, or to get access to a half-sized mini-PCIe slot used for Wireless USB on some models. I really hope future ThinkPads follow a similar design to the T400s, since it is so much easier to upgrade components now.

Screen and Speakers


The LED-backlit WXGA+ (1440 x 900) display on the T400s rates above average, with good color reproduction and very good peak backlight brightness levels. The display part number is LTN141BT08001, which may indicate that it has a Samsung panel. Colors appear bright and vibrant for a matte-finish display, and it has very nice contrast when the backlight isnt at the brightest setting. At 95-100% brightness the screen starts to look slightly washed out, which is pretty normal for higher brightness displays. My comfortable viewing brightness range for this notebook is between 50-60%, giving great black-levels and no hint of backlight bleed. Viewing angles are average for a TN-panel LCD, with colors quickly inverting or washing out as you tilt the screen forward or back. With the matte finish and higher backlight power the screen is readable outdoors and quite visible in your car on a bright day.

Speaker performance was lackluster, but that is common on most business notebooks. They work well for streaming audio or having a VOIP chat, but for movies and entertainment the headphone jack is a much better alternative.

Keyboard and Touchpad


Yes, Lenovo significantly changed the look, feel, and layout of the keyboard on the T400s. After you pick yourself up off the floor from fainting, you will quickly see most of the changes are for the better. The feel of the keys remains mostly untouched from past models ... outside of the fact that the spacebar seems to click loudly if you press it on the edges. The biggest change comes with a redesigned function key section, offering larger "escape" and "delete" keys. Through in-depth research Lenovo found that those two keys were used more than other function keys. As a result they doubled the height, and moved the position of the insert key and F1 key.

I think the coolest difference is the new media buttons and power button. The power switch and mute keys light up when activated, so instead of the power icon showing up on the bottom edge of your screen, the button itself is the indicator. The caps lock button now features a translucent window with an LED that lights up to indicate the caps lock is turned on. One thing that is missing is an AC and battery indicator light facing you with the screen open, as they are now external only.

The T400s offers one feature I have yet to see on any other notebook to date: a speaker AND microphone mute button. While I am not sure how often I personally need to turn off my microphone, if you videoconference or use Skype frequently then a quickly accessed mute button would come in handy. Another minor change is the key tolerances have decreased, meaning there is less room for crumbs or dust to fall in-between keys.

The new touchpad is different, but I am having a hard time figuring out if that is a good or bad thing. The old design used a slightly rough matte plastic finish, which gave some traction and made it easy to move your finger around even if sweaty. The new design has a raised dimple finish with a softer texture that feels strange. I found myself increasing the sensitivity in the Synaptics control panel to make movement feel more fluid, but then found it too sensitive. It seems that you need to apply consistent pressure when moving over the new touchpad, where before it was easy to flick your finger across. I think if the bumpy surface was glossy or more slick I might enjoy it more.

Another change is the shape and size of the trackpad buttons. The buttons have a radius contour that goes through the buttons to the edges where they meet the palmrest. From a design standpoint they flow better with the notebook than previous attempts, and it is even easier to access them from the touchpad now.

Ports and Features


Port selection on the T400s has been greatly improved over the T400 model. New to the back of the T400s is an eSATA port for storage expansion and DisplayPort out, giving you digital video from the notebook itself. Just like the T400 it has three USB ports, one through a combo USB/eSATA port. Lenovo has kept the VGA port for legacy connections, since it is still used frequently for projectors. With the decrease in thickness the T400s lost its dual card slots, only keeping an ExpressCard/34 slot. The T400s offers a docking station connector on the bottom, but it is a new design that is incompatible with older models. The last big change came with the T60, and I can just hope that this docking station format stays the same for a few notebook generations to come.

Internal features include integrated 3G WWAN and a handy GPS receiver. While 3G is pretty common these days GPS seems to always be passed over. Lenovo includes software for initializing the GPS receiver, and translating the NMEA data through a virtual COM port for applications. Since I am fond of Garmin GPS receivers, I installed a trial version of Garmin Mobile PC. Installation was simple and the software will automatically find the virtual COM port for communication with the GPS unit. The T400s was quick to acquire our location with a six satellite lock inside our office. So if you dont own an automotive GPS receiver yet, this $60 piece of software might come in handy paired with the T400s.


Performance


With an Intel Core 2 Duo SP9600 and 128GB Samsung SSD the T400s was no slouch ... despite the Intel X4500 integrated graphics. The T400s was extremely fast to boot, and was quietly waiting at the desktop idle much sooner than other notebooks we have reviewed. The T400s handles day-to-day uses, such as typing a paper, watching Hulu while the boss isnt watching, or enjoying an HD movie all with ease. Gaming presented a problem with the X4500 integrated graphics, so instead of playing Left 4 Dead you might have to compromise with Peggle. 720p and 1080p HD video decoded with no problems at all thanks to the fast processor, although outputting it to a home stereo might be tough without digital audio out through the DisplayPort. One original concern we had with system performance was the speed of the 1.8" drive, but as we found out the 128GB Samsung SSD included with our T400s blew the socks off most 2.5" drives. The only downside to this is the SSD is fairly expensive and the small size has few aftermarket options, whereas the 2.5" market is loaded with affordable alternatives.

Heat and Noise


The T400s managed heat and noise very well during our tests, keeping external temperatures low with minimal noise from the cooling fan. After continuously stressing the notebook over a period of 30 minutes the fan never went above a whisper level. You had to put your ear to the vent to hear it above normal ambient noise. Under light activity the case barely warmed up above room temperature. Under heavier loads such as watching an HD movie or playing a quick game the temperatures increased slightly, but overall stayed very lap-friendly. External temperatures listed below are shown in degrees Fahreheit.

Battery Life


Time on battery with the T400s was good, but not as impressive as the 10 hours experienced on the T400. Currently the only battery size offered is a 6-cell battery with a reported size of 45Wh. Compare this to the 9-cell on the T400 with a capacity of 84Wh, almost twice the size. Even with the smaller battery the T400s managed 5 hours and 48 minutes with the screen brightness set to 70%, Vista set to the Balanced profile, and wireless active. During the test power consumption varied between 6.5W and 8W depending on load. Compared to the T400 the power consumption drop most likely comes from the 1.8" SSD and integrated graphics chipset. Lenovo doesnt have plans to offer a larger main battery for extended battery life, similar to the 4-cell, 6-cell, and 9-cell options on the T400. What they will offer though is an ultra-bay battery to run in place of the optical drive, which should extend battery life by up to an additional three hours.

Conclusion


Overall I think Lenovo put a lot of time into thinking through the changes they made with the T400s so they wouldnt offend too many ThinkPad customers. The keyboard change is significant, but for all intents and purposes they stuck with the tried-and-true design. The keys feel the same, the core layout is the same, the only thing that changed were the function and media keys. Even though the keys look weird at first it takes about 3 seconds to adapt to the new layout. I think the super slim and lightweight design is excellent, moving to a layout that is easier to service by the end-user. The inclusion of eSATA and DisplayPort is something that should have come sooner, considering that neither the T400 nor T500 offer a digital video output without a docking station.

The only complaint I have is with the price, starting well above the standard T400, and the costly drive upgrade options since it is limited to 1.8" models instead of the cheaper and more widely available 2.5" size. If you are in the market for a new ThinkPad and dont mind spending a bit extra for something thin and lightweight, the T400s is a great choice.
